Article 12 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) underscores the vital role of education, communication, training, and public awareness in reducing tobacco consumption and promoting tobacco control policies. This article recognizes that an informed public is essential for effective tobacco control and encourages countries to develop and implement comprehensive awareness campaigns to educate people about the health risks of tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, and the deceptive tactics of the tobacco industry. It emphasizes the need for targeted communication strategies, including school-based education programs, media campaigns, and community outreach initiatives, to reach diverse populations, particularly youth and vulnerable groups. Additionally, Article 12 calls for the training of healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, and civil society organizations to strengthen their ability to advocate for and implement tobacco control measures. Governments are urged to ensure that accurate and evidence-based information on tobacco use and its consequences is widely accessible, using multiple platforms such as television, radio, social media, and print materials. By enforcing Article 12, countries can foster a well-informed society that actively supports tobacco control efforts, encourages behavioral change, and contributes to reducing the global burden of tobacco-related diseases and deaths.
