Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception of Passive Smoking Among Medical and Dental Students of Karachi: A Survey-Based Study

The research paper "Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception of Passive Smoking Among Medical and Dental Students of Karachi: A Survey-Based Study" examines the awareness and attitudes of future healthcare professionals regarding the risks of passive smoking. Conducted among 378 medical and dental students in Karachi, the study finds that 91.3% of participants were aware of passive smoking and its association with active smoking, with cigarette smoke identified as the primary contributor. However, despite their knowledge, fewer than half of the participants reminded smokers of non-smoking regulations (45.8%), and only 37.3% referred habitual smokers for counseling. While most students recognized the health risks, including respiratory diseases and congenital anomalies in infants exposed to secondhand smoke, there was a general reluctance to confront smokers or enforce smoking regulations. The study highlights the need for integrating passive smoking education into medical curricula, strengthening enforcement of smoke-free policies, and improving communication strategies to promote a healthier, smoke-free environment.
