Effects of Pictorial Health Warnings (PHWs) on Smoking Behavior of Educated Adult Urban Population of Islamabad

The research paper "Effects of Pictorial Health Warnings (PHWs) on Smoking Behavior of Educated Adult Urban Population of Islamabad" investigates the impact of pictorial health warnings on cigarette packs in influencing smoking behavior among urban adults in Pakistan. The study, conducted among 384 participants in Islamabad, found that 42% of smokers attempted to quit after seeing pictorial health warnings, with 23% successfully quitting. It also revealed that family environment significantly influences smoking initiation, with 76.3% of respondents acknowledging its role. Additionally, 85.9% of participants believed that media plays a critical role in shaping cultural smoking norms. The research highlights that pictorial warnings are more effective than text-only warnings in deterring smoking, especially in populations with lower literacy rates. The study supports stronger enforcement of graphic health warnings, arguing that they serve as a cost-effective method for increasing awareness and discouraging tobacco use. It concludes that enhancing pictorial warnings, increasing their size, and ensuring strict enforcement can contribute significantly to reducing smoking prevalence in Pakistan
